What is granite and why is Indian granite so popular?

What is granite and why is Indian granite so popular?

Granite is a hard igneous rock made mostly of quartz and feldspar, which is why it is so strong. It forms deep underground as molten rock cools slowly, and that slow cooling creates the grainy, speckled look people love. India is one of the biggest producers and exporters of granite in the world, and its quarries produce an unusually wide range of colours: black, grey, white, red, brown, green, blue and many multicolour stones. When a stone yard in the USA, a builder in the UK or an importer in the UAE needs a reliable granite supplier, India is usually on the shortlist.

Natural Stone Cart is a granite exporter and wholesale granite supplier in India. We supply granite blocks, gangsaw and cutter slabs, tiles, kitchen countertops, pavers, steps and kerbs. In this guide we explain the granites buyers ask for most, how the stone is made into products, how finishes change the look, and how to order and ship it with confidence.

Our granite range: more than 50 colours, North and South India

We export the entire range of North and South Indian granite in gangsaw slabs and cutter slabs. Buyers can choose from more than 50 colours, so you can match almost any project and market. Cut-to-size tiles are available in the 30, 40, 60 and 120 cm series, in different thicknesses and finishes.

We specialise in customised granite products: countertops, tabletops, kitchen platforms, floor tiles and slabs, granite pavers, wall coverings, kerb-edge stone, stepping-stair stone, window sills and door frames. Everything is made to the quality you agree with us, and we keep our existing and new business partners updated at each step.

Popular Indian granite colours and where they come from

South India is the main granite belt. Black Galaxy is closely linked with the Ongole area of Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh. It is a dense black granite with tiny golden specks that sparkle in the light, and it is a favourite for kitchen countertops. Absolute Black is more of a grade than one single stone, and trade guides list quarries in Karnataka (for example around Chamarajanagar), Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Tan Brown, a deep brown granite with black and grey grains, is associated with the Tamil Nadu belt around Salem and Madurai. Other well-known names include Imperial Red, Kashmir White, S White, Steel Grey, Paradiso and many multicolour granites.

Trade names are not always consistent, so the same stone can be sold under different names. That is one reason we always send real slab photos and samples, so you buy the look you actually want and not just a name.

Granite products we export

  • Granite blocks for factories that cut their own slabs.
  • Gangsaw slabs, large and even in thickness, for countertops, floors and wall panels.
  • Cutter slabs, smaller and often more economical, for tops, vanities and tiles.
  • Granite tiles in standard and custom sizes for flooring, walls and steps.
  • Kitchen countertops, vanity tops and island tops made to your drawing.
  • Pavers, setts, cobbles, kerbs and steps for outdoor use.

You can mix several products in one container. Many importers combine slabs and tiles with a few packs of paving to keep freight costs low and to test the market with more than one product.

Finishes: polished, honed, flamed, brushed and leathered

The same granite can look very different with different finishes. Polished is shiny like a mirror and shows the deepest colour. It is used in kitchens, bathrooms and interior floors. Honed is smooth but matte, a soft look with less glare. Flamed is made by heating the surface, which leaves it rough and gives excellent grip, so it is a top choice for outdoor steps, pool areas and driveways. Brushed gives a soft, slightly textured, aged feel. Leathered has a gentle texture like leather and hides fingerprints and marks, which many kitchen buyers like.

Always choose the finish by where the stone will be used. Polished granite is beautiful indoors but can be slippery when wet, so for outdoors we recommend flamed or brushed.

Where granite performs best

Granite is hard, resists scratches and handles heat very well. This makes it a leading choice for kitchen countertops and busy commercial floors in hotels, shops, airports and malls. It also works for staircases, building facades, monuments, garden paving and kerbs. In wet or cold places granite is a safe outdoor stone because it absorbs very little water. For details by use, see our pages on granite countertops, granite tiles and paving stone.

Granite is easy to look after. Wipe it with a soft cloth and mild cleaner, and seal it from time to time if the stone is lighter in colour or has a more open grain.

Packing, loading and shipping granite

Granite is heavy, so a container usually reaches its weight limit before it is full. A standard 20ft container can carry roughly 25 to 28 tonnes, depending on the shipping line and the rules at the ports and roads of your country. We plan every load by weight, not only by size, so you do not pay for space you cannot use. Slabs are packed in strong bundles and frames, tiles in cartons or crates, and all packing wood is treated for export. We ship from Mundra and Kandla and share loading photos with you.

For customs, granite is generally classified under Chapter 25 for crude or roughly trimmed granite (heading 2516) and Chapter 68 for worked stone (heading 6802). Your clearing agent will confirm the exact code and duty for your country, and we prepare the invoice, packing list and bill of lading for them.
