Step 1: Quarrying blocks

Quarries remove stone by cutting large rectangular blocks from the rock face. Granite is often cut using diamond wire saws and controlled drilling, while marble may be cut with chain saws and diamond wire. Blocks are then lifted by cranes and trimmed. Workers check the colour, cracks and size at the quarry. Good quarry practice protects both the workers and the stone.

Step 2: Cutting blocks into slabs

At the factory, blocks are cut into slabs. Gangsaw machines use many parallel steel blades with abrasive to cut a whole block at once, and multi-wire machines use diamond wires. Block cutters and bridge saws cut single slabs. Cutting thickness is chosen to suit the product, commonly 20 mm or 30 mm, and slabs are cleaned and dried.

Step 3: Polishing and finishing

Slabs pass through polishing lines with many heads that use finer and finer abrasives to bring out the shine. Other finishes are made by honing, flaming (heating the surface), brushing, leathering and sandblasting. After finishing, slabs are checked and defects may be filled with resin if the stone allows and the buyer agrees.

Step 4: Cutting tiles and custom pieces

Slabs are cut into tiles, steps, countertops and custom pieces using bridge saws, CNC machines and waterjets. Edges are shaped and polished. Tiles are calibrated so thickness is even. Custom pieces are numbered to match drawings.

Step 5: Quality control and packing

Each lot is inspected for size, thickness, surface, colour consistency and defects. Pieces are sorted and packed in bundles, cartons or crates with treated timber for export. We take photos, mark the packages and load them into containers with careful securing.

Visit and inspection
