Quality, packing and export: how we protect your stone

Stone is heavy and breakable, and a long sea journey can be hard on it. Good quality control and strong packing protect your investment. Natural Stone Cart checks every lot before packing, uses packing methods designed for stone, and prepares the documents your customs agent needs. This page explains how it works.

Quality control

We check size, thickness, flatness, surface finish, colour match and defects. For slabs we also check polish level and edges. For tiles we check calibration and squareness. We separate pieces that do not meet the agreed standard. We agree the grading with you before shipping, and we explain what natural variation to expect.

Packing methods

• Slabs: upright bundles with protection between polished faces, on strong frames of treated timber, strapped tightly.
• Tiles: cartons with spacers, stacked on pallets, strapped and wrapped.
• Blocks: placed on timber supports and secured in the container.
• Custom pieces: wrapped, numbered and packed in crates or A-frames.
• Paving and cobbles: pallets or crates with edge protection, or bags for pebbles.

All wooden packing material is treated to meet export requirements, so it can pass customs smoothly.

Container loading

Stone must be loaded so that weight is balanced and nothing can shift. We use timber supports and strapping inside the container, and we take photos before closing and sealing. We plan the load by weight, because a 20ft container usually carries roughly 25 to 28 tonnes, subject to local rules. If your port has lower limits, tell us and we will plan accordingly.

Export documents

We prepare the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and, when needed, the certificate of origin and other certificates required by your country. Packing wood treatment details are available if requested. We can quote FOB or CIF terms, and we send copies of documents to your customs agent so they can prepare early.

Inspection and claims

You are welcome to arrange third-party inspection before loading. When your container arrives, check the goods and the packing, and tell us quickly if there is a problem, sending photos. We review each case fairly and work together on a solution.

Marine insurance

Under CIF terms we arrange marine insurance. Under FOB terms you can insure the shipment yourself. We recommend insuring every stone container, because accidents at sea or at ports can happen even with perfect packing.

Natural variation: what to expect

Natural stone is a natural material, so no two pieces are exactly the same. Colour, grain, veins and small marks vary from slab to slab and from lot to lot. This variation is part of the beauty of the stone, and a good design plans for it. To reduce differences on a project, buy all material from the same lot, keep slabs in bundle order and lay pieces out before fixing them.

We tell you honestly what to expect from each stone, and we send photos of the real lot. If your project needs very tight colour matching, tell us early, and we will select accordingly.

Care and maintenance

Natural stone is easy to look after with soft cloths and mild cleaners. As with any natural stone, use soft cloths, mild cleaners made for stone and clean up spills quickly. Avoid strong acids and harsh abrasive pads. For floors, use mats at entrances to catch grit, and protect the surface under heavy furniture.
