Why architects choose basalt

Basalt is a volcanic stone. It is dense and strong, with a fine even grain. It is a top pick for modern floors, pool surrounds, plazas and garden paths.

The natural surface has a good grip, so it is also safe where it gets wet. We supply basalt as honed tiles, flamed pavers, cobbles and cut-to-size pieces.

Basalt: dark, dense and modern

Basalt: dark, dense and modern

Basalt is a fine-grained volcanic rock that forms when lava cools quickly. It is dense, very strong and has a deep grey to black colour. In architecture, basalt gives a clean, modern look for floors, plazas, pool areas and facades. Natural Stone Cart is a basalt stone supplier in India supplying tiles, slabs, pavers, cobbles and cut-to-size pieces.

If you are searching for basalt stone India, basalt tiles, basalt pavers or a basalt stone supplier, this guide explains the main points.

Basalt: low colour variation and an ultra honed finish

Basalt is one of the denser natural stones, a solid lava stone with high density and strength that has been used in architecture for centuries. It suits interior and exterior floor and wall applications, including cladding, tiles, pavers, bench tops, street furniture and kerbstones. Basalt has a very low degree of colour variation, and with an ultra honed finish it has an eternally chic deep charcoal grey colour and an incredibly soft feel. We provide basalt slabs, tiles, cobbles and bricks in different finishes, sizes and thicknesses.

Where Indian basalt comes from

Large areas of Maharashtra and the Deccan plateau are covered by basalt formed by ancient volcanic activity. Quarries in this region supply dark grey and black stone for construction and architectural use. Basalt colour is generally even, with fine grain and small natural pores in some types. Because quality varies by quarry, we select material with the strength and colour your project needs.

We share photos and samples so you can compare shades and textures.

Properties that matter

  • High compressive strength and hardness.
  • Low water absorption for many grades.
  • Good resistance to frost and heat.
  • Good grip with honed, flamed or textured finish.
  • Even dark colour that pairs well with timber and light stone.

These properties make basalt suitable for busy public places and for wet areas around pools and fountains.

Products and finishes

We supply basalt tiles, paving slabs, kerbs, steps, cobbles and setts, and cut-to-size pieces. Finishes include honed, flamed, brushed, bush-hammered and natural. Flamed and brushed finishes bring a lighter grey tone and give high slip resistance, which is why they are popular for outdoor paving. Honed basalt gives a smooth, dark, matte surface for modern interiors.

Tell us the finish you want and we will send a sample, because finish changes the shade noticeably.

Design uses

Basalt works for plazas, driveways, garden paths, terraces, pool surrounds, fire pits, wall cladding and feature steps. Indoors, honed basalt tiles create a bold floor for lobbies, restaurants and modern homes. Use lighter stone such as sandstone or limestone for contrast, or combine with black granite for a dramatic, uniform look.

Packing and shipping

Basalt is heavy. We plan loads by weight and use strong crates or pallets with edge protection. Cobbles and setts can be packed in bags, boxes or crates. We ship from Mundra and Kandla. Customs classification is generally under heading 2516 for crude basalt and 6801 or 6802 for worked products such as setts, kerbs and tiles; your broker will confirm.

Samples, photos and approval before you order

Natural stone changes from one lot to another, so we never ask you to buy without seeing it. For basalt, we send real photos and short videos of the stone you will receive, and we can courier a small sample so you can check colour, pattern and finish in your own light. Samples work best when they come from the same lot as your order, so please tell us if you want the sample and the container to match closely.

When you approve a sample, we keep a reference piece. If your order is large, we can send bundle photos before loading, or arrange third-party inspection. This simple process protects you from surprises and protects our relationship with you. Ask us for samples on our request samples page.

Planning your container and shipment

A good load plan saves money. A standard 20ft container can usually carry roughly 25 to 28 tonnes, but the exact limit depends on the shipping line and on road and port rules in your country. Basalt is heavy, so loads are planned by weight. We calculate the load by weight and by size, so you do not pay for space you cannot use. Mixed containers are possible: you can combine different stones, sizes or products, which helps wholesale buyers keep stock varied.

We ship from the ports of Mundra and Kandla in Gujarat to ports around the world, and we share photos of the loading so you can see how your stone is secured. Sea freight time depends on the route and the shipping line, and we give you an expected time with each quote.

Export documents and customs for basalt

Clear paperwork keeps your container moving. For every shipment we prepare the commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading, and where your country needs it, a certificate of origin and other documents. Packing wood is treated for export, and we can supply the treatment details if your port requires them. Crude basalt is generally classified under HS heading 2516, and worked basalt under 6801 or 6802.

Customs rules and duty rates differ by country, so please confirm the exact classification and duty with your customs broker or the official tariff of your country. If you tell us your port and clearing agent, we will send documents in the format they prefer, and we are happy to answer their questions directly.

Quality control, inspection and claims

Before packing basalt, our team checks size, thickness, surface, colour and edges. We separate pieces that do not meet the agreed standard, and we explain what is natural variation and what is a defect. You are welcome to arrange third-party inspection before loading, and we cooperate fully with inspectors.

If a problem is found when the container arrives, tell us quickly and send photos of the packing, the damaged pieces and the container condition. We look at each case fairly and work with you on a solution. Good packing, honest photos and clear agreements keep claims rare.

Working with architects, builders and fabricators

Professional buyers need more than a price. Architects want samples and clear specifications. Builders want the right quantity on the right date. Fabricators want slabs that cut well and match across a project. We support all of them with real photos, written specifications, labelled packing and honest delivery dates. Landscape and public-space buyers value basalt for strength and a safe grip.

For larger projects we can produce in batches, keep reference samples, and share progress photos. If you send a bill of quantities or drawings, we check the details and tell you early if something needs a decision, such as the size of a piece or the thickness of an edge.
