Slate: rustic, layered and strong

Slate: rustic, layered and strong

Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic stone that splits naturally into thin, flat layers. This gives it a rich, textured surface that is full of character. It is dense, absorbs very little water and stays strong in frost, so slate has been used for roofs, floors and walls for centuries. Natural Stone Cart is a slate stone exporter in India supplying slate tiles, wall cladding, flagstones and thin stone veneer sheets.

If you are searching for slate tiles India, slate wall cladding or a natural slate supplier, this page explains the colours, finishes and uses.

Slate formats: slabs, tiles, ledger panels, field stone and castle stone

Slate is valued for its strength and resilience, which makes it durable for roofing, flooring and wall cladding. We supply slate as slabs, tiles, ledger panels, wall cladding tiles, field stone and castle stone, in multicolour and natural finishes and in different sizes. Ledger panels are especially popular for feature walls because installers can fix them quickly and the result looks like a hand-built stone wall.

Colours and varieties

Indian slate comes in black, charcoal, grey, green, rust and multicolour mixes of gold, copper and brown. Multicolour slate is especially popular for feature walls because every piece has a different blend of colours. Slate comes from several regions of India, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal, and each source gives a slightly different colour and texture. We share photos and samples of the lot.

Because slate splits into layers, its surface is naturally uneven. This gives good grip but also means tiles may vary a little in thickness unless calibrated.

Where slate works best

  • Bathrooms and wet rooms with a natural split surface.
  • Feature walls and fireplaces in stacked strips.
  • Patios, paths and garden steps in flagstone form.
  • Kitchen floors with a rustic look.
  • Thin slate veneer for furniture, doors and curved walls.

Slate works with both modern and traditional designs. Black slate gives drama. Multicolour slate gives warmth and energy.

Formats we supply

We supply natural split slate tiles in standard sizes, calibrated tiles, wall cladding strips and panels, irregular flagstones, steps and copings, and flexible thin slate veneer sheets on a fibreglass backing. Surface finishes include natural cleft, honed and brushed. Thickness varies from about 10 mm to 20 mm and more for flagstones.

We can create custom mixes of colours and sizes for your project.

Care

Slate is easy to maintain. Sweep or vacuum, then mop with a mild cleaner. A stone sealer or enhancer can deepen colour and make cleaning easier, especially on natural cleft surfaces. Avoid strong acids. Because slate can show tiny flakes on a split surface, installers often brush the surface after laying.

Over time, slate develops a gentle patina that many owners enjoy.

Shipping slate

Slate is packed in cartons or crates with edge protection, then palletised. It is dense and quite heavy, so we plan the container by weight. We ship from Mundra and Kandla. Customs classification for worked slate is under HS heading 6803, and your broker will confirm the exact code and duty.

Care and maintenance

Slate is easy to maintain; sweep, mop with a mild cleaner and use an enhancer if you want deeper colour. As with any natural stone, use soft cloths, mild cleaners made for stone and clean up spills quickly. Avoid strong acids and harsh abrasive pads. For floors, use mats at entrances to catch grit, and protect the surface under heavy furniture.

We give simple care instructions you can share with your own customers. Good care keeps the stone looking fresh for decades, which is why natural stone is considered a long-term investment in a building.

Start with a trial order and grow from there

If you are new to importing slate from India, we suggest a simple plan. First, tell us what sells in your market. Second, review photos and approve samples. Third, place a trial container with a mix of colours or sizes. Fourth, after you receive the stone and see how your customers react, plan repeat orders and volume contracts.

Many of our long-term customers began with one mixed container. We keep your preferred selection and packing details on file, so repeat orders are faster, and we keep you updated if a colour or size changes.

What affects the price of slate

Buyers often ask for one simple price, but the price of slate depends on several things. The stone variety and its rarity matter most, because some colours come from small quarries and cost more. Thickness, size and surface finish change the cost, since thicker and larger pieces need more material and more careful handling. Calibration, meaning how exact the thickness and size are, also adds work. Selection grade matters too: a premium selection with very even colour costs more than a mixed commercial selection. Quantity helps, because bigger orders spread packing and loading costs. Finally freight terms (FOB or CIF), the destination port and the exchange rate affect the final number.

Slate is dense, and we pack it with edge protection to avoid flaking. To get a fair comparison between suppliers, always ask for quotes on the same stone, size, thickness, finish and terms. We write all of these clearly in our quotation, so you can compare line by line.

Samples, photos and approval before you order

Natural stone changes from one lot to another, so we never ask you to buy without seeing it. For slate, we send real photos and short videos of the stone you will receive, and we can courier a small sample so you can check colour, pattern and finish in your own light. Samples work best when they come from the same lot as your order, so please tell us if you want the sample and the container to match closely.

When you approve a sample, we keep a reference piece. If your order is large, we can send bundle photos before loading, or arrange third-party inspection. This simple process protects you from surprises and protects our relationship with you. Ask us for samples on our request samples page.
