Sandstone: the natural choice for paving and walls
Sandstone: the natural choice for paving and walls
Sandstone is a sedimentary stone made of sand grains pressed and cemented together over millions of years. It has a warm, natural look and a slightly textured surface that gives good grip. For outdoor paving, steps, patios and wall cladding, Indian sandstone is one of the most popular natural stones in the world, especially in the UK, Europe and Australia. Natural Stone Cart is a sandstone exporter in India supplying tiles, paving slabs, steps, kerbs, cobbles and wall cladding.
If you are searching for a sandstone supplier in India, Indian sandstone paving, or sandstone tiles India wholesale, this guide covers the main colours, finishes and standards.
Colours and uses of sandstone
Sandstone is a softer stone than granite and easier to work. It has been used as a building and construction material for centuries because it resists weathering. It is found in red, yellow, grey, black and brown colours with a pleasing look. We supply sandstone for both indoor and outdoor use: natural finish tiles, slabs, paving stone, landscaping stone, cobblestone, parking stone, garden stone, wall covering, rock steps, patio and backyard stone, and stone stairways in a wide variety of colours, sizes and textures.
Popular Indian sandstone colours
Kandla Grey is a soft grey to blue-grey sandstone with subtle tones, very popular for modern gardens. Raj Green is a mix of green, brown and grey with a rustic look. Mint is a fresh buff-and-cream blend. Modak is a warm mix of reddish, pink and buff tones. Autumn Brown, Teakwood, Fossil Mint, Lalitpur and Agra Red are also well known. Colours vary from lot to lot, so approve a sample before ordering.
Sandstone usually comes from Rajasthan and nearby states, and we share photos of the actual lot you will receive.
Finishes: riven, sawn, honed and tumbled
Riven is a natural split surface with a slightly uneven texture and excellent grip. It is the most popular finish for patios and paths. Sawn and honed finishes are smooth and flat, giving a contemporary look. Tumbled stone has softened edges and an aged appearance. For wet areas, a riven or textured finish is usually best.
Many UK buyers ask for calibrated paving, which has a consistent thickness, commonly around 20 mm with a small tolerance, so it can be laid quickly and evenly.
Sizes and products
- Paving slabs in single sizes (for example 600 x 600 mm, 900 x 600 mm) and mixed-size patio packs.
- Tiles and steps.
- Copings, sills and kerbs.
- Cobbles and setts.
- Wall cladding, stacked strips and split-face panels.
We prepare packs in the formats your market uses, including mixed-size circles, patio kits and project quantities.
Standards, testing and documents
For external paving in Europe, natural stone slabs fall under EN 1341, and CE marking is commonly requested. Supplier data sheets for Indian sandstone paving such as Raj Green and Kandla Grey typically report flexural strength values around the low-to-mid 20s MPa when tested to EN 12372, but results depend on the lot and test. Ask us for the test reports and declaration of performance relevant to your lot and finish, and for slip-resistance results if your project needs them.
We support your compliance needs with documents we can obtain from the producer and with samples for independent testing.
Shipping and packing sandstone
Paving is packed on wooden pallets or crates with strapping and edge protection, often with polythene wrapping. Calibrated paving is stacked carefully to avoid chipping. We plan the container by weight, because sandstone is dense, and ship from Mundra and Kandla. Customs classification is often under HS heading 6801 for setts, kerbs and flagstones or 6802 for worked stone, depending on the product, and your broker will confirm.
Working with architects, builders and fabricators
Professional buyers need more than a price. Architects want samples and clear specifications. Builders want the right quantity on the right date. Fabricators want slabs that cut well and match across a project. We support all of them with real photos, written specifications, labelled packing and honest delivery dates. Landscape buyers like mixed-size packs and calibrated thickness for fast, neat laying.
For larger projects we can produce in batches, keep reference samples, and share progress photos. If you send a bill of quantities or drawings, we check the details and tell you early if something needs a decision, such as the size of a piece or the thickness of an edge.
Natural variation: what to expect
Sandstone is a natural material, so no two pieces are exactly the same. Colour, grain, veins and small marks vary from slab to slab and from lot to lot. This variation is part of the beauty of the stone, and a good design plans for it. To reduce differences on a project, buy all material from the same lot, keep slabs in bundle order and lay pieces out before fixing them.
We tell you honestly what to expect from each stone, and we send photos of the real lot. If your project needs very tight colour matching, tell us early, and we will select accordingly.
Care and maintenance
Sandstone is low-maintenance. Sweep, rinse and use a stone-safe cleaner; a sealer can reduce staining in wet climates. As with any natural stone, use soft cloths, mild cleaners made for stone and clean up spills quickly. Avoid strong acids and harsh abrasive pads. For floors, use mats at entrances to catch grit, and protect the surface under heavy furniture.
We give simple care instructions you can share with your own customers. Good care keeps the stone looking fresh for decades, which is why natural stone is considered a long-term investment in a building.
Start with a trial order and grow from there
If you are new to importing sandstone from India, we suggest a simple plan. First, tell us what sells in your market. Second, review photos and approve samples. Third, place a trial container with a mix of colours or sizes. Fourth, after you receive the stone and see how your customers react, plan repeat orders and volume contracts.
Many of our long-term customers began with one mixed container. We keep your preferred selection and packing details on file, so repeat orders are faster, and we keep you updated if a colour or size changes.
